Le Mémorial
More than two million animals a year are used in laboratory testing in France, mostly out of sight. One Voice, the French animal-rights association, built them a memorial in Minecraft. Launched 10 July 2026 with We Are Social, Le Mémorial is a walkable world of themed paths, one each for rodents, fish, birds, domestic mammals and primates, lined with monuments and guided by NPCs who tell the stories of individual animals: Charlie the beagle, Tiko the lemur. At the centre, a counter updates daily with the number of animals in experiments. The choice of Minecraft is the point: a game about building, used to make something permanent for lives that were treated as disposable, and to reach an audience that will never read a report on alternative testing methods.
